5 Benefits of Custom vs. Stock Home Plans

If you are planning to build a custom home, you may have wondered whether to choose a stock plan or have a home designed just for you. Most people start with a general idea of what they want in their new home. Next, they may look at a multitude of existing plans that meet their basic requirements, but it can quickly become overwhelming as you flip through plan after plan only to find that none are exactly what you are looking for.

So, should you go ahead and contact a designer to develop a custom plan just for you? We think so. Here’s why:

  1. Every individual or family has a unique lifestyle. Instead of spending hours getting frustrated when you cannot find a plan that works for you, why not share your needs with a designer who can develop a plan that delivers exactly what you need?

  2. If you find a stock plan that is almost what you want, but must be modified to work for you, any cost savings from purchasing a stock plan can quickly disappear.

  3. The land you will build on may dictate the plans for your home. For example, building a home on a lot with an unusual shape, rocky terrain, or beautiful scenery may make a custom plan the more logical choice.

  4. The designer you work with will take into account current building codes and can address specific requests you might have.

  5. Your home will be one-of-a-kind. If you’re tired of production homes that all look the same, or if – with the current tight housing market – you’ve been unable to find a home to buy and have decided to build, why not have a showpiece?
